Microsoft dropped a pretty surprising announcement at its recent E3 2017 media briefing: original Xbox games will be made backwards-compatible for the Xbox One family of systems. While you would expect for this new feature to only be related to special digital re-releases, it turns out that it’s actually pretty deep: you can use the original discs.
That’s right, those OG Xbox games you have sitting somewhere sitting in your attic can be dusted off, placed into an Xbox One and be played just like that. That’s bonkers! But, there’s a catch: this will only work for a few select titles. Seeing that 360 BC is limited to only a few hundred titles at this time, this isn’t really a surprise, but it’s still cool nonetheless.
These details come from a Tweet posted by Xbox’s Albert Penello. He also confirmed that digital licenses will also carry over to Xbox One. On top of that, you’ll also be able to system-link play across all three Xbox generations.
Your original Xbox discs will work. Digital licenses will carry over. AND you can system-link play across all three generations.
