Now, that is an interesting premise. I have to admit it’s a bit odd to say, but the first season of Batman: The Telltale Series was the best Batman story I’ve heard in the 76 years the franchise had been around. Just the surprise villain alone was incredible. That being said, I was a bit apprehensive on how the studio would be able to one-up its performance with Batman: The Enemy Within. Well, in an interview on the PlayStation Blog, Lead Writer James Wendeler did just that.
As we saw in the official trailer, the Joker is back. His name of “John Doe” has a deeper meaning in The Enemy Within, as he really isn’t the Joker yet. He notes the studio calls him the Proto-joker internally, and in The Enemy Within players will get to decide his fate. According to Wendeler,
“We want fans to know that their relationship with John Doe (and eventually, the Joker) is something they’ll be affecting with the decisions they make throughout the season. As Batman and Bruce attempt to stop the immediate threat to Gotham, John will be watching your every move and learning from your choices. By the end of the story, you will have created your own version of Batman’s classic nemesis through your interactions.”
This means that not only do our actions impact the Bruce/Batman conundrum in Gotham City, but we could in theory have the Joker become a….wait for it….good guy? This is a huge change from the murderous psychopath we know, and it has some incredible implications in our gameplay going forward.
We’ll have to wait until Tuesday to find out exactly how we can shape the Joker. I do, however, have an idea on how this will go. I have a strange feeling that we will need to choose between making Bruce’s reputation go up with the citizens of Gotham City, or take one for the team and save the Joker from himself. It would make sense seeing as how Telltale has hit us with emotional decisions in the past.
Let us know what you think below, and whether or not you’d save Joker if you could.
