With the passing of the old year and the dawning of the new comes renewed hopes and expectations for the year ahead. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate, once wrote: Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier’. Ah, but who cares about all that, a new year means new games! 2018 is already shaping up to be a year to remember. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be highlighting a different game each day, giving you all the relevant details and salient talking points for what we think are going to be among the best games of the year. Suit up Agent, because today we’re going to be looking at Crackdown 3
Title: Crackdown 3
Developer: Reagent Games
Release Date: Spring 2018
The third game in the Crackdown series. You once again play as an unnamed agent who is tasked with taking down the crime syndicate that has taken over the city. It’s also set to be a big advertisement for Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service with the multiplayer featuring some truly spectacular destruction made possible by the cloud.
The first Crackdown title was something of a surprise hit. A lot of people bought it purely for the Halo 3 beta access that was included with the game but were then captivated by the open-world gameplay and general carnage that you were able to undertake. With David Jones (he was not involved with Crackdown 2) back at the helm, it does appear that the game will have more in common with the first game than the second game that took too many missteps. The other thing that makes this a game to keep an eye on is the highly impressive looking multiplayer section. It uses cloud computing to enable destruction on a truly epic scale with buildings dropping all around you with spectacular results.
Unfortunately quite a bit. For a start, there’s the fact that things have gone very quiet for a long time. The only footage we have seen of the game has been a developer diary style video that was shown at Gamescom 2015 and a short trailer at E3 2017. Secondly, there’s the fact that its release window has been repeatedly pushed back and we still don’t have any more than a definitive release window than Spring 2018. Thirdly, just look at the number of developers involved with the game. This isn’t even a definitive list as I know of some indie developers who have been subcontracted in to help out with the game. While this could simply mean that they’re just trying to get the necessary manpower required to finish the game, it could be the case of too many cooks spoiling the broth.
As with all games, I hope so, but I’m not going to hold my breath. With the game constantly being delayed, going into hiding, and collecting development studios, the signs aren’t good. There is definitely a place for a quality open-world superhero-style action game. I’m just not sure that Crackdown 3 is the game that is going to deliver all this. If Reagent Games (and their cadre of fellow developers) can pull off a technically solid game with the right level of humour and full of fun gameplay, this could be a real hit. Marry all this with the groundbreaking multiplayer (assuming that their ability matches their ambition), and we could have something special.
Well, that’s our thoughts on Crackdown 3. Are you excited about the game? Why not share your thoughts in the comment section below? And don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the next game that we think is going to make a big impression in 2018.
