In 2003, Microsoft released Voodoo Vince, a platforming video game for the original Xbox. The game followed the titular voodoo doll who is tasked with stopping the villainous ‘Kosmo The Inscrutable’ from taking over the world. Nearly 14 years after the game was released, a remastered edition will be coming to the Xbox One in April.

I had the opportunity to play through two levels of the remastered edition at PAX East, while Clayton Kauzlaric, founder of Beep Industries spoke to me about the game. As someone who never had the chance to play Voodoo Vince when it originally launched, I was anxious to finally play the game that friends recommended to me when I was younger. Since the remastered edition only enhances the visuals and framerates, I was concerned that the gameplay wouldn’t age well since that aspect of the game remained as it was in 2003.

Fortunately, Voodoo Vince: Remastered played wonderfully. The platforming elements were crisp, responsive, and most importantly, fun. In the first level that I played, I jumped across platforms lighting the character on fire in order to ignite blue flames that were shooting out of the wall. Vince stays lit for only a short amount of time, so fast and precise platforming is needed to succeed.

The second level featured more platforming and combat sections. I was introduced to Vince’s Voodoo powers. These special abilities are randomized, but all end up with the enemies in the area meeting their hilarious demise. Since Vince is a voodoo doll, he inflicts pain on himself with these special abilities. Whether Vince had pins being stuck into his body, a wrecking ball crashing into him or even our hero chugging down a bottle of laxative, watching enemies die often had me chuckling for extensive periods of time.

I enjoyed my time with Voodoo Vince: Remastered. In fact, my only complaint with the hands-on session was the fact that the camera angles weren’t always ideal. Camera difficulties occasionally made structures get in the way of the action.

As a fan of platforming video games, Voodoo Vince brought me back to a time when that genre was the talk of the town. After playing through two levels of the game, I left the demo station craving more. Voodoo Vince: Remastered is a charming video game featuring a unique character with cool abilities. It will also be a part of the “Play Anywhere” program, so buying the game on the Xbox One will also get you a Windows 10 version as well. Whether you are a fan of the original or someone who is looking forward to experience Vince’s journey for the very first time, be sure to check out Voodoo Vince: Remastered when it launches next month.
